COURSE #3: THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

GOSPEL OF MATTHEW: THE PROMISED MESSIAH

The Gospel of Matthew is the first Gospel (an account of Jesus’ life and ministry) in the New Testament. It’s the best possible first book for the New Testament to follow all those Old Testament Scriptures.

In the Gospel, Jesus teaches what it means to be part of His kingdom—the kingdom of heaven. We will explore His betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection, and commission of His disciples to spread the good news.

Matthew’s writing appears to have been written to a Christian audience who was either Jewish or those very familiar with the Jewish religion. The Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the Messiah (Matt 1:1)—the promised descendant of King David who would bring God’s kingdom to earth and establish a time of peace and justice. Matthew quotes the Old Testament extensively, and special emphasis is placed on Jesus’ fulfillment of prophecies—which was important to the Jewish audience. Not only is Matthew looking to his Jewish past; he’s also focused on the future. Specifically, the future of the up-and-coming church. The story of Jesus is told with importance on His role as Messiah—The Christ.
